San Miguel de Allende is all set for the 58th Candelaria Festival, in which

110 local and regional vendors will be selling a wide range of plants, flowers,

fertilizers, planters and other gardening items from January 31 to February 10 in

Parque Juárez.

There is an age-old tradition in Mexico to bless the seeds before planting them

in the ground. Whether they are flower or vegetable seeds, or grains, receiving

a blessing is a way to ensure an abundant harvest.

The celebration is known as Candlemas, or Our Lady of La Candelaria in

Mexico. This religious holiday is celebrated by Christians to honor of the Virgin

of La Candelaria.

The feast day is officially February 2, although the festivities often extend well

over several days.

In San Miguel de Allende, la fiesta runs from the end of January through to

February 10, each day filled with a variety of concerts and cultural activities.
